Canning with Leslie: Pickled Green Beans

Canning with Leslie-2

Ok so you all know last year my canning series titled “Canning with Grandma“? We’ll this year I’m continuing that series with some of my close family and friends! It turns out I still have SEVERAL jars of last summers’ pickles so my goal this summer was to come up with several fun and “functional” recipes that I could guarantee would be gone before next summer!

My friend Leslie left her job almost a year ago to start her own catering business; Out of the Box Cooking. She’s the type of gal who’s a professional and full-time mom that somehow seems to keep it all together (so it seems! ;) )! A fellow gardener herself she enjoys canning her fresh veggies and was simply thrilled to share one of her favorite recipes.

2011 Garden Checklist: April

Garden Check List-2

My Daffodils and Hosta’s are just now starting to poke their little heads above the surface and spring is here and every day seems to be a little warmer. So it’s time to think about finishing up the planning and starting to do some planting!

Foundations are going in right now for beautiful flowerbeds, vegetable gardens, and lawns. If your plans involve trees, shrubs, bulbs, cold weather veggies like broccoli, asparagus, lettuce (of any kind), carrots, or things similar then it’s time to plant. I just recently put in 9 new trees and finished last week planting the first rotation of my cold weather beds. I’ve also recently added some new bulbs to my flowerbeds.

So, here’s the list for the rest of my April, it’s time to plant!

Dear Garden Journal,

Get ready to watch the first little sprouts of your daffodils, tulips, and even iris will start poking their heads above ground soon. Spring is just around the corner and it may not feel like it, but it’s here. It’s always been my favorite moment in gardening, when I wander out to check on the plot and see the first young green shoots breaking ground!

Hawaiian Farm Girl: Week 5

I’ve come to the conclusion that if there would be a place I could compare the Big Island of Hawaii to, it would be the garden of Eden-except thankfully, Hawaii doesn’t have snakes!

Garden: Winter Prep

GCD-780x4322

It’s that time of year where the wind is getting a little sharper and the grass is growing slower, the leaves are just starting to show a hint of yellow and winter is just around the corner. So what am I doing running a rototiller and putting down manure? Well this just happens to be the best time for garden preparations to begin.

Hawaiian Farm Girl: Week 3

GCD-780x432

Whether it’s with the plants, animals, WWOOFers (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms), or maybe former ideas on what you thought you knew about Hawaii, organic gardening, or life for that matter…the philosophy here on the farm remains: “out with the old and in with the new”.

Hawaiian Farm Girl: Week 1

GCD-780x432_thumb

She maybe sweet but her adventurous spirit runs deep; meet Chelsea, our Hawaiian Farm Girl. Follow her journey for the next two months as she shares her experience of tree house living, bathing in waterfalls, and Hawaiian organic farming. There’s so much to be had…look out Swiss Family Robinson!

High class design in overalls. It's the simple life of a farm through the eyes of a couple of crazy designers. We call ourselves Green Couch Design and we are Bringing Design Home.
