Trunk or Treat Halloween Family Costume Theme: Sweet Treats Bakery

A Sweet & Easy Homemade Family Halloween Costume

Halloween seems like ancient history now, but we just had to share our family costume from this year! It’s become a tradition that Cale’s family come up with the best Trunk or Treat Theme. In the past we have done Transformers with homemade costumes that actually change from robots to cars, and even Mario Brothers. This year, with all of our kids under the age of three (don’t drink the water!), we we’re all feeling a little pressed for time. Our little bakery theme was a simple solution to dress the kids up in ridiculously cute outfits (providing us with future blackmail material!), and keep the adults happy with an easy baker’s costume.

It was a little crazy getting us all there (with costumes, props, naps, juice cups, snacks, diapers, etc.), but once it was all said and done, we had a blast baking our little Halloween Treats. Enjoy!

Although we we’re gypped out of 1st place by Woody, Jessie, and the whole Toy Story Gang (It was rigged!), our sweet theme was definitely the cutest trunk we’ve done so far. Don’t you just love our pumpkins painted like cupcakes with sprinkles?! :)

Now, back to turkey prep people, Halloween is so last year!

Our apologies for the late delay on posting these pics. We left for a vacation in Panama the day after Halloween!

GCD: DIY Around the House Couple’s Shower & Cookie Bar [Invitation Design]

AroundTheHouseShowerInvite

You know it’s wedding season when your mail box is full of wedding and shower invites. Some of our dear friends are getting married in May and recently bought their first home. We wanted to do something special to help them celebrate so we threw them a DIY Around the House Couple’s Shower. We really tried to think through the decor and made sure that everything we created for the decorations was something the couple could turn around and use in their new home.

Of course what new home isn’t full of paint swatches, brushes, paint cans, stir sticks, and messy floors? We loved the paint chip garland tutorial found here but instead of getting out the sewing machine we just used a glue stick. :)

For an afternoon Sunday shower we wanted to keep the food simple and sweet. We decided to do a cookie bar (complete with cold whole milk of course!) and asked a few close guests to share a batch of homemade cookies.

The large paint swatches (found for FREE at your local paint store) worked great as simple ways to label each platter and table activities.

Each table was furnished with a house plant and brown kraft paper painted with teal and purple smudges. We wanted to come up with a fun way to encourage guest interaction. Each table was assigned a different activity and guests were encouraged to move from table to table throughout the shower.

  1. HIM Table: Guests were asked to write “tips and tricks on how to love a man” on blue paint swatches for the wife to be.
  2. HER Table: Guests were asked to write “tips and tricks on how to love a woman” on purple paint swatches for the husband to be.
  3. DATE GAME NIGHT Table: Guests were asked to choose a month out of the couples first year of marriage to host the newlyweds. Mickey and Reagan love spending time with their friends and playing games. This was a fun way to keep in touch with friends and a creative solution for inexpensive date nights throughout their first year of marriage. We printed this lovely 8.5 x11 2013 calendar here and had guests write down what month they would host the newlyweds.
  4. BLESSINGS Table: Guests were asked to write marriage advice and/or prayers for the couple.

Notice the handmade burlap pillows? One of them says “lets make…” while the other pillow says “pie” on one side and “whoopie” on the other. I’ve seen this done with “coffee” and “love” before as well. Either way, it’s a really cute way to customize a gift that relates to the couple’s since of humor. Find a basic tutorial here.

Overall it was a wonderful afternoon and we enjoyed blessing our friends with love and good things for their life together as a married couple. The shower was perfectly simple and definitely made for easy cleanup. ;)

STUFF: Farm Prints by Dolan Geiman

orig-4

We’ve been following Dolan Geiman’s work for the past three years. He and his business partner, and wife, have been an example to us as small business owners trying to make a living while being creative. It’s been really fun watching Dolan’s work take shape and move from his original one-of-a-kind construction pieces to these petite 8″ x 8″ reproductions of original collages and illustrations printed directly onto poplar wood blocks.

Everday Design: Handmade Balloons

ed-green_bedroom_large

Since our wedding Cale and I have had a “thing” for balloons. We love their free spirits and the whimsical feel that they can bring to any occasion. At our wedding reception we had giant 4 ft x 4 ft round white balloons at each of the tables and they created the perfect canopy for our outdoor wedding. Since then we can’t help but be a little bit obsessed with balloons and simply fell in love with our latest Everyday Design artist group who created and documented their handmade balloons in their “Balloon Factory”.

Date on a Dime: Thankful for…

DD.header-thankful

As you are probably more than aware, we are in that season of giving thanks. Though there was an attempt to not “go with the flow”, and to come up with something that wasn’t completely season-dependent, the attempt fell short and we gave in to the overwhelming desire to join in with the thankful festivities. Besides, there’s nothing better to kindle that flame than to sit down together on a cold day with a cup of hot cocoa, and reminisce on all the things we’re thankful for. And as a bonus, we made our “Thankful List” a beautifully adorned one. We first went in search for the best leaves in the neighborhood and, since it was a little rainy, enjoyed a walking cuddle under our umbrella. Once our selection was made we started the process of flattening our leaves, placing them inside a large book and using a few extra as weight. Then commenced our sipping and thanking. When our list was complete… our leaves were not yet flat!! There would be no laminating tonight. =/ We laughed and figured that we’ll have to have another short date in the near future to add our adornments, and complete our beautiful creation.

Date on a Dime: Homemade Pizza Party & MORE!

L.D.header - Melon

Go on, throw that pizza dough! Considering that neither one of us is an Italian pizza pro, our homemade dinner-in adventure was an entertaining release of creativity. Each having our own canvas of dough, we pulled out from the fridge/freezer anything we had that might make a tasty topping, and we were off!  Though we searched for some romantic Italiano music for atmosphere, we settled for something we had on hand we both liked. Once our creations were in the oven we built our relationship through the age-old method of laboring side by side… with the added bonus that there would be no mess at the end of our night! And since many hands make light work, we had plenty of time to segue into a most important time of relationship building… communication! The topic: what is it that we would love to do? You see, we’ve recently started getting paid to save the world by bringing our recyclables to a hungry machine that, in return, spits out a receipt good for cash (it takes more time and effort than just dumping them in a big blue bin for someone else to deal with, but our efforts will soon pay off). So with all these pennies and dimes flowing in, we saw an opportunity to make a dream happen. We talked about stuff varying from going to a show (Les Miserables or Wicked), Disney World (for when kids inevitably arrive as a result from our date nights), and a Netflix subscription, to hang gliding, parasailing, and an Alaska adventure tour. We won’t spoil it by telling you what we decided our recycling paybacks would achieve for us… you’ll have to come up with your own. And before you know it, while you’re dreaming and scheming of fun times ahead, your yummy dinner will be ready for consumption. So dish it up and settle yourselves in for a cuddle and a movie (we picked one from that everlasting list of “I’ve always wanted to see that”).

Our date of choice this month covered several romantic points all in one evening:
1. Homemade pizza party
2. Those who clean together stay together
3. Saving the world
4. Connecting and Scheming/Dreaming
5. Romantic dinner in: eat, watch and be merry

Fresh and Local: Kansas Farmers’ Market

GCD-940-x-360_thumbnail2

A few weeks ago we we’re able to checkout a Kansas Farmers Market while visiting my family. I was overwhelmed by their great selection of produce, homemade bread, jams, plants, and selection of art. This was one market that truly has all things local.

Dill Pickles: Canning with Grandma

GCD-940-x-360_thumbnail

Cale loves Kosher Dill pickles. Unlike the the sweet Bread-and-Butter Pickles he likes the old school sour ones and eats them like french fries. As a fun surprise and a way to save the mound of cucumbers growing on my kitchen counter I decided to grab Grandma’s expertise and try my hand at pickling!
