2013 Garden Checklist: May
A cool wet spring has given our garden here in Oklahoma a great start. I’ve barely watered yet… I say yet, because I have this gut feeling that mother nature is going to switch on the oven soon. That being said, it’s time to talk gardening again. Most plants have been planted very late this year due to the cool and almost fall type weather this spring so let’s keep the watering and the soil comments on the list. Keep in mind that very soon you will need to add a mid afternoon watering time to give your plants a little relief.

Good luck and keep up the green thumb practices. Don’t forget to check back with your planting schedule if you’re using Traditional Seed Company’s Online Garden Planner. These plans can be very helpful in organizing your next steps towards a great summer garden.
Also, don’t think that it’s too late to plant… As I mention above many warm weather plants can just now go it. Tomatoes, Okra, melons, and squash can all be planted now for great crops mid-summer.

LIFE: Around Here
Around here things feel like they are finally moving forward! It seems projects we have been waiting to start are finally underway and we couldn’t be more excited!
After several cold days, and then a few late, late, late frosts (May 4th, seriously?!!) I “think” it’s safe to say that spring is officially here! 
We planted 40 tomato plants! I had to put Cale’s eyeballs back in their sockets when I told him how many plants I wanted to plant this year. Since I won’t be eight months pregnant (like last summer) I plan on canning my little heart out and stocking up good for the winter. Look for our “Canning with… Series” starting back up in June!
Remember our refrigerator that had to be held shut by a bungee cord? We’ll it’s moved to “The Shop” and been replaced by this beauty! We had some friends actually give us this one for FREE! What an amazing and totally unexpected blessing (Thanks Williamson Family)!
At 8 months old Little James is scooting/army crawling around and loving being outside. We’ve given up on trying to get him to stop eating the grass. After all, a little dirt is good for ya right?!
For Oklahoma the Irises are always a sign that spring is here! We planted these a few years ago from extra bulbs Cale’s Grandpa was splitting. They have gotten so tall that I can see them above the windows in our kitchen! Makes my heart happy and I love filling our home with fresh cut flowers from around the yard.
I think I have finally perfected one of our favorite breakfast dishes, a crustless quiche (based off of this recipe)! Gotta get in all the oven goodies I can before the summer heat sets in.
After five years of marriage we are repainting/updating our bedroom! I was super excited about this until the gray/purple color I picked out was actually lavender! Our house is so small that all the wall colors need to gel together otherwise things can get really out of hand. The new gray/purple choice, alongside the other rooms, is starting to make our home feel like a rainbow! Looks like I”ll be choosing a a new color direction (and starting over)! 
Anyone wanna come over for a painting party?!
We had our first play date in the water on the front lawn! What started as a fun way for the kids to cool off ended with our little niece running around butt naked and James completely soaked and muddy. I’m not gonna lie, I definitely felt like ” The Cool Mom”! 
And finally, the chicken coop is completed! This used to be the old hen house where they would raise baby chicks. Cale cut a door in the back end and created a little run for our chickens. After loosing one chick to a big snake we’ve already had to face the good and the bad side of having real animals on The Farm. Cale reminded me that I need to get used to it since I’ve already made plans for owning bees, pigs, etc. Becoming a mom has definitely made me a softy so I’m gonna have to put on my big girl panties boots if I want to be a legit country girl!

2013 Garden Checklist: April
It’s spring! Spring is finally here in Oklahoma. After a beautiful Easter weekend I can’t help but get excited about gardening. The sun is out and at least for the last couple of days we’ve seen some rain. Overall a great start to the growing season. If you planted any cool weather, or early season produce, you might be harvesting a few things. Any veggies that you wintered are hopefully showing an early harvest like our carrots in February! Regardless, it’s time to start stretching your green thumbs and getting ready for a great veggie season. You might look back over my post about the awesome new garden layout and scheduling tools from Territorial Seed Company and while you’re at looking into ordering some Heirloom Seeds!
If you’re laying out your garden look closely at your sun angles and shade ratios, keep in mind the prevailing winds in your area, and watch closely for an update from me on garden layouts coming a little later this month.
Now that I’ve got your head spinning with ideas of pretty blooms and juicy produce let’s look at the garden checklist for April.

That’s a lot, but it’s worth it when you are serving up home grown entree’s that blow the neighbors minds. Keep your garden plan close at hand through this season. April, May, and June can be hectic as it is, but you don’t want to miss a prime planting time due to other distractions. If you haven’t already I would start looking into a compost bin, as we move toward harvest and cleaning out those garden plots. All the old grass and leaves can be placed in a compost bin and the soil used to boost the plants later in the season.

2013 Garden Checklist: March
Are you seeing little green things poking through the ground? I’ve got spinach and carrots and crazy enough garlic coming up! You usually plant garlic in the fall, but if you are more of a tomato’s and peppers kinda person you’ve got a little time yet before planting season begins. Most veggies, in Oklahoma, will go in around the end of March, first of April. Check your local planting guides to find out proper planting times for your area. Now let’s get down to it!
2013 Garden Checklist: February
Ok, so it doesn’t feel super warm out yet, at least not consistently, but gardening is in full swing! Many people are starting seeds indoors and waking up their perennials as spring quickly approaches. I’ve already been out, warmed up the raised beds, cleaned up the over winter weeds, and put in my first run at square foot gardening; not to mention digging up an unexpected crop of carrots! So if your green thumb is already itching for green sprouts or if you’re just one of those people that likes to get an early start here are a few February garden tips to get you going…
2012 Garden Checklist: August
It’s August and it’s hot! This month for a garden checklist you’ve got some basic rules of thumb, about heat protection, sun protection, and hydration. I know it sounds like I’m talking about working out or the proper summer safety techniques. But honestly, your plants are the same way, they have skin, and need water, and they suffer sun damage just like us. So below you’ll find some basic rules of thumb and techniques to protect your plants and prolong your summer yield.

CNY: Tim & Erin [Pippin + Pearl & CooperHouse]
Ever since I met Erin, a few years back, I have been inspired by the way she balances her full-time mom and creative career. Erin’s resume includes a wide list of experiences as a handmade shop owner, an artist, a blogger; Pippin + Pearl, and last but certainly not least she also runs a design studio with her husband Tim; CooperHouse.
“We’re a two man (or man/woman, if you prefer) creative studio that specializes in web development and branding for creative businesses. We’re learning that there is a creative side to almost every business and we definitely don’t discriminate, however most of our clients are designers, artists, bloggers, interior design industry etc. I handle all the art direction/design/project management and Tim handles all the development/accounts/hosting/maintenance.”
Together, from the comfort of their home, they take on clients from all sizes and still maintain time with their two daughters, date lunches, and vacations to see family on the West Coast.
Q1) What was the inspiration behind starting your own business?
A1) Tim was the first to strike out on his own. when the agency he was working for in Colorado closed its doors 8 years ago, he felt it would be a good time to try his hand at freelance web development. He worked on his own for a few years before luring me away from my design job to be his partner. I was inspired by his vision, but was also just really craving some independence after spending 8 years working in the Air Force design department. We both have always wanted autonomy in our careers and the freedom to work from anywhere, so that is the main reason we started CooperHouse.
Q2) How are your personalities alike and how they are different?
A2) We are both creative types. I’m a painter, he’s a sculptor & musician, so I think we understand each other very well on that level especially. I’ve never worked with anyone who is as respectful as he is of my creative process and the effort that I put into my design. I spent years learning Web design and so I also have an appreciation for his abilities. I know that this company needs both of our skills and talents in order to function well. Also, I think our personalities started out as more opposite and have grown to be a little more similar. I’ve mellowed a bit, and he’s become more social. I think our strengths are helpful in our business… Good Cop vs. Bad Cop and all that.
GCD: Concrete Jewelry in Dwelling Spaces
This past Monday we took a little road trip and dropped off our first batch of concrete jewelry at Dwelling Spaces in Tulsa, OK. We have heard amazing things about this store and it’s owner, Mary Beth, but had no idea just how wonderful it was until we we’re able to visit in person. Not only is the store aesthetic eclectic and fun but it’s got all the heart and soul we could ever ask for from a store carrying our products.

It’s that time of year where our twitter feed becomes all a buzz with the latest happenings from one of the coolest festivals around the country. In case you have been living in a hole (or WAY out in the country ) South by Southwest (SXSW) is an annual music, film, and interactive conference and festival held in Austin, TX.
The last few years it’s been really exciting to see Oklahoma art and music represented at SXSW and one of the ways this has been able to happen is through The Buffalo Lounge, presented by The Oklahoma Film & Music Office:
