Endurance

life-dallas-marathon-2011-4

2011 has been a year of endurance.

It’s been a year of diligence. Overwhelmed and empty we’ve pushed through and found inspiration and breakthrough on the other side.

Date on a Dime: Time Capsule

DD-timecapsule-4

Recently, with a scratching record sound effect, the idea struck my wife and I that there’s one day going to be a little one and her doey eyed look questioning what life was like just 11 years from the turn of the millennium. In a whirl of activity to try and push the other consequences of this idea aside, we decided to make a time capsule together, with a mix of things which we treasure and some information about things at this current time in history. (Now, should those beseeching eyes start looking our way, we can simply hand them a shovel & a treasure map, and teach them the valuable lesson of digging out their own answers.)

Date on a Dime: Spring Time

L.D.header---Spring-Time

Unless you’re a snowman, or an icicle dependent on frigid temperatures for survival, spring time is pretty much universally accepted as a sweet time of year, and a nice time for dating sweetly.

As the day was just beginning to retire, but the air was still warm & the sky not quite pink yet, I asked my lovely lady if she’d care to join me for a stroll around the neighborhood – to get landscaping ideas for when we eventually buy a house together. As the words tumble from my mouth, an immediate sense of team & intimacy was conjured. Beginners luck.

This vs. That: Diapers

TvT Diapers Gray Final 2

Disposable vs. Cloth

This: Disposables
  • Convenient!
  • Easy to fit many babies
  • Not green—most do not biodegrade, are full of chemicals as they are petroleum based
  • Nursery and day-care friendly
  • Poo disasters!…you know what I’m talking about, up the back, into the car seat, out the side of their pants etc. Ick!
  • Common side effects include diaper rash
  • COST–$2500 from newborn to potty-trained, check out this link
That: Cloth
  • Inconvenient? Matter of opinion and lifestyle I think.
  • SO many choices, now just find the right diaper for the right fit on your baby (See the links below).
  • “Green” as they are reusable.
  • Most nursery and day-cares are not-so friendly…but I would love to be proven wrong here.
  • Poo disasters no more! With a good cover (which most are) this is not a problem. They hold the poo in on the back and the legs. BUT what about cleaning the poo off the diapers? — enter modern technology! The toilet spray tool or biodegradable liners that make flushing the icky stuff…very simple.
  • Not near the problem with diaper rash, especially with natural fiber diapers and covers
  • COST WAY LESS! See for yourself.

Landscape and Garden; Vision

GCD-940x360_thumbnail

We want to see our world transformed into a greener place, and one of the ways to do that is challenge people to relearn the art of gardening. We have a passion for mixed use gardens that are producing functional and healthy foods for our families, while looking good enough to make the neighbors jealous.

Fresh and Local: Kansas Farmers’ Market

GCD-940-x-360_thumbnail2

A few weeks ago we we’re able to checkout a Kansas Farmers Market while visiting my family. I was overwhelmed by their great selection of produce, homemade bread, jams, plants, and selection of art. This was one market that truly has all things local.

Dill Pickles: Canning with Grandma

GCD-940-x-360_thumbnail

Cale loves Kosher Dill pickles. Unlike the the sweet Bread-and-Butter Pickles he likes the old school sour ones and eats them like french fries. As a fun surprise and a way to save the mound of cucumbers growing on my kitchen counter I decided to grab Grandma’s expertise and try my hand at pickling!
