Fresh and Local: Eclair Bakery (Arroyo Grande, CA)
I know, I know you are probably tired of us sharing about our Cali trip but we simply had such a wonderful time that we want to share every detail! So… with that comes one of our favorite random stops that seriously kept us coming back for more!
Introducing the loveliest little local bakery; Eclair Bakery in Arroyo Grande, California!
We we’re greeted by the nicest tattooed baker I’ve ever met (except for my friend Tom who lives in Portland)! I think it might have had something to do with the fact that he has family in Okemah, OK (represent OK!) but regardless we visited this bakery everyday that we were in Arroyo Grande! Each day we were served by the happiest, most sincere people… the kind that you just wish could be your friends!

Fresh & Local: Nowakowski Sweet Corn Farm
Our July Fresh & Local comes a little bit early but I wanted to make sure you had time to take advantage of this seasonal treat (especially for The Fourth)! Last year was my first visit to the Nowakowski Sweet Corn Farm and although it has been a completely insane summer I could not and simply would not miss this yearly opportunity to stock my freezer with fresh sweet corn.
The Nowakowski’s great grand parents originally started in Mcloud, OK in 1948, built a barn in 1951, and were officially established at their current location in 1962. In 1978 they began experimenting with different corn varieties in their garden until they found a favored seed type.
Often called “The Sweet Corn Man”, Greg Nowakowski, is shown with his son Josh and his two grandsons. They help run the family farm from everything to sweet corn, wheat, soy bean, hay, and even a small patch of pumpkins and gords!
The Nowakowski’s own and rent more farm land then they can keep track of. It’s hard to believe that some of the land they have been renting for the past 67 years! Still to this day their “contract” remains the same… an honest word and a good handshake.

On a bright little corner in Norman sits a perfect little shop. With fresh cut Oklahoma grown flowers and beautiful potted plants you feel like you’re walking into the secret garden, but Birdie has so much more than just gorgeous flowers. Around every corner and in every nook this beautifully bright and airy shop has everything you could every want to find. One-of-a-kind prints and cards, sustainably minded kitchen accessories like aprons and tea towels, even a beautiful line of men’s and women’s clothing! Welcome to Birdie, our Fresh and Local feature of the month.
Birdie is at it’s most perfect in the spring. Fresh flowers fill the space and Katie, the owner and a fourth generation florist, is always busy creating awe inspiring arrangements and wonderful bouquets for local weddings and other spring events.

They had a little wedding consultation area at the old shop, where my girlfriends and I would look through all the bridal books and dream up our weddings! The greenhouses were a pretty magical place too. Looking out on a sea of red poinsettias at Christmas is super pretty.” -Katie

“COOP Ale Works began with a humble home brewer and a simple dream. The idea spread as friends tasted the unique beers, and the popularity of those early batches encouraged a dedicated team of three partners to begin working to make the dream of a local brewery a reality. Mark Seibold, JD Merryweather and Daniel Mercer spent the next two years traveling throughout the United States, Europe and Central America visiting breweries and sampling local flavors. The insight gained from entrepreneurs, brewers, biologists, operations personnel and consumers provided an invaluable basis for a serious endeavor into quality commercial brewing. Get ready to watch the first little sprouts of your daffodils, tulips, and even iris will start poking their heads above ground soon. Spring is just around the corner and it may not feel like it, but it’s here. It’s always been my favorite moment in gardening, when I wander out to check on the plot and see the first young green shoots breaking ground!
Dear Garden Journal…
It’s true this year for Christmas my intensely insightful and loving sister presented me with my very own garden journal. So here it is, every month I’ll post a unique or abnormally insightful entry from my Garden Journal just for you, and I’ll include a list of To Do items for that month that will help you follow my progress this year. This is my first entry and since winter is still holding it’s terrible grip on all my green friends, I’m looking forward to warmer days and planning for a productive growing season.
Kansas Farmers Market: Fresh and Local
A few weeks ago we we’re able to checkout a Kansas Farmers Market while visiting my family. I was overwhelmed by their great selection of produce, homemade bread, jams, plants, and selection of art. This was one market that truly has all things local.
Nowakowski Farms: Sweet Corn
If you are from the Midwest you know there is nothing like eating fresh corn on the cob. Marinated with the perfect blend of butter and salt and pepper, it’s the perfect addition to any summer time meal.

Cale and I love to support local businesses and help communities build sustainability. It takes time, labor, and love, but it’s worth it. Recently in a personal attempt to build a better relationship with our community we’ve partnered with a local boutique, Gypsy Haven, in downtown Jones, OK. Our hope is that by using our dirt covered veggies as bait we can lure in local shoppers and possibly support our ever-growing garden addiction.
