When we got the call from Lorelei about possibly working on a new bed, I jumped at the chance. My forte was working with found materials and reclaimed wood but this project stretched me into new areas using fresh materials and a more polished look. The challenge was to take a step into the clean and sleek. I hadn’t been there for a while but Lorelei knew exactly what she wanted and gave me great information and insight into the design style she preferred. This was truly an opportunity to challenge the ideas that I had and push for a new aesthetic; which was exactly the challenge laid before us. A few late design nights and a plate of sushi later and we had a project! A new bed with floating side tables and a full headboard. This was going to be fun!
And there you have it folks! The bed was done completely in oak, with a simple walnut finish. We didn’t want a strong grain in the final product so we worked very hard to condition and prep the wood for a nice even color and then used a heavy stain, with a lot of pigment, to effectively ‘paint’ the grain. This was done to give a sleeker look and simplify the texture of the bed against it’s surroundings. One of the major changes I made in the design layout was to tilt the headboard back just slightly to give it more comfort for the late night reader. I happen to be one myself and to this day have not found a bed that I can appreciate from that perspective. Hopefully this changes things for the new owner.
When setting up for the photo shoot in our little field I kept wanting to just run and dive on the bed, it’s just one of those pieces that will draw you into it, hold you close and ask you to stay up for just one more chapter…Hope you enjoy!
