You can learn a lot about people from the books they like to read. Books say a lot the way a person thinks, the type of topics they enjoy discussing, and what stories inspire them.
I had to laugh the other day as I was cleaning out our bedroom and noticed our stack of books on opposite ends of the headboard. Now, before I brag to much I am not the consistent reader here! Ever since we have been married Cale is a much better reader than me but I’m trying really hard to get into it more and more. The library of birth/parenting books that my sister-in-law and girlfriend Mackenzie have been supplying me with have been the perfect thing I’ve needed to really get started.
Although, I should probably spread out my topics a little bit more! It’s pretty obvious what is on my brain and constantly moving in my belly!
May 31st will be Cale and I’s four year wedding anniversary. I cannot believe we have been married for that long. Our marriage is something that has truly gotten better with time and with that has come certain things we have learned to love and respect about each other (for better or worse right?!). Some of the things are sweet, like how Cale is a really great helper around the house, while some of them are just plain weird! Either way it’s the small things that have made marriage so much fun and given it so much character over the last four years. These are the things you can’t stand and yet you love about that person. These are the things that make marriage to your significant other so interesting (ladies you know what I’m talking about!) and without them life would just be boring.
We we’re recently asked to be featured on an up and coming home interior design blog. Have you heard of Kara Paslay Designs? Well if you have not you definitely need to check out her and her husbands interior design company based out of Tulsa. They’ve always got lots of home projects going on with simple DIY’s perfect for any budget.
Kara asked us to share our story behind starting Green Couch Design, and the road we’ve taken to get to where we are today in a new series called “Inspire Me”. It’s a pretty heartfelt post, but one we’ve truly enjoyed putting together and going over some of where we have been and what we have overcome. Sometimes you just need to remind yourself of the process.
We hope it inspires you today as you pursue your dreams! Read the feature at Kara Paslay Designs and make sure you tell her we said hello!
From the Farm
One of the things that I love about my husband is the fact that he enjoys using his architectural degree as a handy man around our little farm. His design philosophy is one that marries the function of a building with great aesthetics. The longer we are married the more I respect this opinion and see the need for both. When Cale is working on a project, at home or for a friend, he wants to give them a solution that is aesthetically pleasing, money saving, and as efficient as possible. Now, this doesn’t mean he uses “cheap” materials, but when he can, he prefers to use found materials instead of purchasing new. It’s this old school philosophy of using what you have, married with his love for design, that makes him the perfect designer handy man.
Meg just walked in after a 9 mile run. She’s sweaty, her face is flushed and she’s breathing hard… I have to say it, she’s gorgeous!
I think it’s safe to say that Cale and I are pretty much hopeless romantics. We love, love. True love. The kind that is not easy, the kind you wait for, and fight for. The kind that proves fairy tales can come true.
It was Valentines Day, 2006.
I’m probably the youngest old man you’ll ever meet. I know that sounds strange but the reality is I can’t wait to get old. With my trusting rocking chair and pipe I will be destined to sit on the front porch and solve the world problems with a slight grumble and ornery smile. But until then I have two other pursuits, landscape and product design. I create for both inside and out, and strive constantly to bring the two together, whether it’s hand made pots for the living room or full scale seating and outdoor kitchen designs for a patio. I love to create.
While Cale tends to bring his architectural straight lines to our little home, I tend to bring the curly lines. You know, the ones that go off the page and around the house, over the garden, and into all types of bright colors and yellow kitchens. A nit picker in the most sincere way I take problem solving to the extreme. Whether it’s conceptualizing a new brand for a graphic design client, creating kitchen towels for a new product line, or the frame arrangement in our bedroom…I will edit, tweak, literally maul, every possibility until I’ve come up with the best solution. My purist heart, glass is half full, oldest child “I must please you” mentality longs to find the truest solution and deliver it in the most beautiful and whimsical (when necessary) package. Every time.
I like running, in fact I love running! I have a thing for bones and sticks. When I get really excited I just have to find something to grab in my mouth and run around with! My favorite pass-times are laying in the shade, getting scratched behind the ears and fetching my red KONG toy. My strengths are love, faithfulness and a never tiring desire to play. I sleep a lot and chase birds and small rodents all around the farm. Don’t let me fool you, I may look cute but I pack a punch, just as long as you don’t scare me. My part in Green Couch Design is keeping the humans working and reminding them about taking breaks to throw my ball and take me for walks. I’m so glad to be able to meet you, I would lick your hand if I could. Have an awesome time browsing our website and remember to come back often and check up on the blog. I’ll be in there from time to time, giving out the secrets of successful napping, fetching and the like. Well catch ya later I’ve got a ball to…SQUIRREL…catch.
