2012 Garden Checklist: May
What a year we are having in Oklahoma. So far it’s been surprisingly wet, and surprisingly cool. Not that I don’t think we deserve it after last summer and winter!
So down to business; how many of you have already started to harvest some early veggies? We’ve already been eating broccoli, and harvesting radishes. Although my radishes didn’t do as well as I had hoped, kind of puny, but we’ll try again next year. If you took the time to get your cool weather plants in, you should be enjoying some harvest right now. And if you’re a hot weather gardener, then your watching your tomatoes and peppers develop for your first jar of salsa! Usually I would be talking about dealing with heat about now, and getting ready for that hot dry spell from the end of May till mid August. While I’ll still include some of those reminders on my list, something different that you’ll see this year is pest management. Due to the weather wonders around here we are fighting more than our normal share of pests. So get out your garden tote and get ready to battle the bugs!

2012 Garden Checklist: March
Well it’s that time of year again… in spite of the cold and dreary weather it’s time to pull out the gardening tools and get things moving. I’ve been prepping new raised beds and setting up cold frames. A little work now will make for a really wonderful gardening experience as the days get longer and warmer.
Hope these suggestions help kick start your green thumb this spring. Send me pictures, cale(at)greencouchdesign(dot)net, of your gardening adventures and fruits as things take shape. Some good friends of ours recently purchased 20 acres and planted their first batch of fruit trees! We’d love to see how things are progressing in your neck of the woods and get ideas back from our readers. It’s looking like it’s going to be a great year for gardens, so I can’t wait to share more with you as the adventure develops.

2011 Garden Checklist: October
Winterization is the theme for September and October. As you finish up your fall gardening, you should start looking at the plants and things around your home that need to be prepared/protected from the cold.
I hope this helps as we move toward the winter months. If you winterize properly you’ll see a much quicker greening of your garden and a fuller more aggressive growth the next spring. Even though we don’t have frost on the windows yet, that time is just around the corner. So be prepared now and get ready for a beautiful garden this coming spring!

2011 Garden Checklist: August
Let’s just say it; “Here in the Midwest it’s HOT!” But with these little tips and tricks our garden can beat the heat and those veggies can last into the winter. Summer and I have a love/hate relationship. I love summer for the beautiful puff ball clouds and the long days, for the joys of the harvest and the way everything seems to just slow down a little bit as if the world senses we should pause and enjoy. I hate summer for the long heat waves and droughts and the daily work of watering. It’s summers like this that really get to you… In the Midwest it’s so hot my poor plants are wilting from the top down even as I pour the water to them. Luckily I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve to keep my little green friends happy. Mulch is a big one, a strong watering schedule, and a good hat! I’ve got my favorite big brimmed straw hat… I look like a crazy old man wandering around the garden (somewhere in between Gandalf and Wild Bill)! So now that I’ve rambled along, another side affect of the heat and the south, I’ll let you get to your Garden Checklist.
2011 Garden Checklist: June
When your sleeping with the windows down and the sounds of frogs at night you know it’s officially summer time! It’s that time of year where you can almost sense the excitement in the cool night air…and that’s not JUST from the kids being home from school! Meg’s Birthday is in June so we always enjoy fresh strawberry shortcake (I swear that girl could eat strawberries everyday!) and we also get to FINALLY start enjoying the fruits of our labor. So get ready folks…it’s almost harvest time!
2011 Garden Checklist: April
My Daffodils and Hosta’s are just now starting to poke their little heads above the surface and spring is here and every day seems to be a little warmer. So it’s time to think about finishing up the planning and starting to do some planting!
Foundations are going in right now for beautiful flowerbeds, vegetable gardens, and lawns. If your plans involve trees, shrubs, bulbs, cold weather veggies like broccoli, asparagus, lettuce (of any kind), carrots, or things similar then it’s time to plant. I just recently put in 9 new trees and finished last week planting the first rotation of my cold weather beds. I’ve also recently added some new bulbs to my flowerbeds.
So, here’s the list for the rest of my April, it’s time to plant!
