2013 Garden Checklist: March

Are you seeing little green things poking through the ground? I’ve got spinach and carrots and crazy enough garlic coming up! You usually plant garlic in the fall, but if you are more of a tomato’s and peppers kinda person you’ve got a little time yet before planting season begins. Most veggies, in Oklahoma, will go in around the end of March, first of April. Check your local planting guides to find out proper planting times for your area. Now let’s get down to it!

When we started our garden it was January and we’ve already been watering, and thinning and generally spending time outside. The beauty of it is that with the weather changing you really start to feel a part of the seasons. You’ll notice that you don’t need your jacket as much anymore, and you’ll start to learn to listen to your plants. Do they need water, do you need to add more mulch? Many of these things have “rules of thumb”; mulch needs to be 2-3″ deep and replenished about once every other month or so. But the real know how of gardening is watching the plants and the weather. You’ll know if your plants need covered or if they can take that cool snap, because you’ve seen them do it in the past. This kind of knowledge is the stuff you can’t find in stores or on HGTV. ;)

Also, have you checked out the online Garden Planner from Territorial Seed Company? It’s super easy to use and will definitely help you get on top of your gardening schedule regardless of where you live! You simply plug in the size of your garden beds and the frost dates that correlate with your area. Select and drag the plants you want to grow this year and it will automatically design a printable garden schedule for the rest of the year. See a sample of our garden schedule here.

Until next time…
Keep your hands in the dirt and your head in the clouds!
