If you like to garden even a tiny bit July has got to be one of your favorite months! For those of us here in the Midwest life seems to slow down some with the summer heat wave and yet all our hard planning, weeding, and watering is finally paying off.
One the best decisions we made in June was to finally invest in a watering system. We didn’t want to go overboard with something overly expensive but have found one that meets our needs for about $20.00 at the local hardware store + the cost for a few extra hoses. We we’re fretting about leaving our plants during the summer months to go on vacation so this investment allowed us to leave feeling confident that our plants would survive without us around for a few days.
Meg’s already planning her canning. With the new supplies she got for Christmas she’s sure to stock us up good for the winter. One of things we try to do is plant veggies that can well. You may favor some canned foods over others so make sure you plant extra of the ones you like so that you don’t end up with a supply of pickles from a year ago (which can go bad after a while)! Also, remember canned jams and salsa make great holiday gifts! Canning can be a lot of work but giving a handmade gift that is food is something those hard-to-buy for relatives are guaranteed to enjoy! PLUS taking advantage of those extra tomatoes now will be one less thing on your holiday “To Do” list later.
So, there you have it! Lot’s of exciting happenings in the garden this July. What has been your favorite veggie of the summer thus far? Anything that has surprised you?
