Here we are again, another summer gone, and all the adventures we had, are memories to be told around the Thanksgiving dinner table. We’ve learned a lot this summer. Meg and I have traveled from Texas to California and back again, 28 hours straight in a car will really teach you how to love each other. We found new friends and reconnected with old ones, we’ve said good bye and hello more times than we can remember, and felt the loss of missed connections, and moments taken for granted. In all; this summer we found life was a lot like picking blackberries there are thorns and sometimes tangles but the cobbler makes it worth it in the end.
So we are saying goodbye to summer, and looking toward this fall and we can’t wait! With the blackberries gone it’s raspberry season and they don’t seem to have as many thorns. We are also looking forward to some wonderful new products, and new developments in design. The opportunity to write more, and worry less, the triumph of finishing projects and the thrill of getting new ones. The trial of learning from our mistakes and growing stronger. The challenge to perform the perfect berry picking grab without catching one sharp barb.
We’ve learned the importance of honesty, and ‘doing the right thing’ even when it doesn’t make you money. We’ve also found the strength to give hope to those without it. The idea that we have a choice on how we live our lives and how we change our world. We have an obligation to those around us to fight for their freedom as well as our own.
We learned how to accept people the way they are, and how to pull people up to where they should be, even when they don’t think they deserve it. We’ve narrowed it down that design is about problem solving and stepping into another persons shoes, telling their story and giving them a better future. I don’t know how many times Meg and I found ourselves searching for words to describe what we do and why. Ultimately it came down to this; “we like to solve problems because we love to help people tell their story”.
We believe even more than ever that it is possible to have a wonderful family and own your own business. We’ve also found that while it may be a lot of work sometimes, it never seems to be as bad as the thought of rush hour traffic. Oh, and there is nothing like the sound of silence to help you think when you need that last minute inspiration before heading to a client meeting.
It will be a year this December since we started this adventure called Green Couch Design and sometimes we can’t believe that we are here. Two crazy twenty somethings, that used to be balls to the wall in the big city. All talk about moving out to Portland Oregon and setting up shop in a downtown loft. Don’t get me wrong we still love Portland and a downtown loft sounds pretty good sometimes. But then I’m sitting here listening to the serenade of crickets and owls, with stars I can actually see over my head. And damned if I don’t love sitting in my rocking chair with the morning sun rising in front of me. We laugh that we’ve become two old young people, but I think we may just be starting to find what we came out here to find…A simpler life.
So here we are counting down the last days of summer, picking out those last juicy berries we have to strain to reach. Our buckets are full and almost overflowing, and I can already taste that cobbler! So while I lite my pipe for one last summer smoke and listen to crickets singing me to sleep. I wish you all the best fall and hope you had an awesome summer.
